We spent part of the afternoon on Thursday, March 5, 2009, birding at Lake Miramar while on the Lake Hodges and Kit Carson Park Trip (San Diego's Bird Festival). Lake Miramar has been created by a dam and is a drinking-water reservoir and recreational lake in San Diego, California. We observed this Glaucous-winged Gull at the reservoir. The Glaucous-winged Gull, Larus glaucescens, is a large, white-headed gull that can be found along the western coast of Alaska to the coast of Washington. It also breeds on the northwest coast of Alaska. During non-breeding seasons, Glaucous-winged Gulls can be found along the coast of California, and they frequently hybridize with the Western Gull, a close relative. The term glaucous describes its coloration with its white-tipped wings. This species has pink legs and a yellow beak with a red subterminal spot. During winter, the head and nape appear dusky, and the subterminal spot becomes dark. Young birds are brown or gray with black beaks, and take four years to reach adult plumage. It was a partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the upper 60's.
